Around The Block is a scrapbooking supply company that creates paper and all kinds of innovative scrapbooking tools. I took over as their website administrator and rewrote the site using PHP and Smarty. I've added a custom build shopping cart (it's private - for scrapbooking stores only) and photo gallery.

Although there are a number of freelance portals on the web, I wanted to create one that is simple for all to use that is loaded with cool and timesavings features. I use GetAFreelancer.com often, but I spent a lot of time giving them ideas to improve their site in various ways. Needing a final project for a web development course in college, I finally decided to develop my own freelance portal.

Background

Looking at all the feature involved in a freelance portal, I really didn't want to write my own from scratch. But, I needed to do a final project for a web development course in college. Rather than doing yet another shopping cart in ASP.NET, I got permission to implement this idea.

Built on phpBB board which can be implemented on the site if desired.

Description

This is was my first business domain (second domain after Davisvillage.com). I got a Palm IIIc from work and wrote a home teaching program on a demo of NSBasic. To have it last longer than five days I needed to register NSBasic. So I decided to make it shareware to recoup the $150 it would cost to register. My wife was skeptical, but it paid off. I later wrote other Palm & Pocket PC applications which continue to sell.

Shiblon.com continues to bring the most most reliable income, even though it is modest. The most popular selling program lately has been MyWard.

Behind the Scenes

There are many behind the scenes features than no one but myself will ever see. They include an admin interface for tracking registrations and resending lost codes, or generating codes where needed.

I also wrote a custom Mailing list program to send monthly status of new programs or updates.

Description

DVD Anthology is a free service that allows users to easily compile lists of owned DVDs and wish lists. There are a number of different formats to print these lists off, including check-out lists if you have a habbit of loaning your movies to friends and family.

The service works heavily with Amazon web service for DVD information. Main DVD information is imported to the local server when added to a persons list or wish list.

Background

I created DVD Anthology to fill a college database programming requirement. The class was for Microsoft SQL Server but due to my limitaions on my hosting server I used MySQL. I created functions where I would have otherwise use triggers, etc.

This project was started to created a better version of DVD Anthology, but I have never got around to finishing it.

Plans

Ultimately I'd like this to replace DVD Anthology because it has a nicer interface, but DVD Anthology currently has a large user base and more features so I don't know that it ever will. It may just be a competitor.

ZuSHOP is a site where you can find the current listed items of the ClickBank market place, as well as older items that may no longer be listed. It has a convenient search tool if you are looking for items related to a key word.

The site is fairly new still, so not all my desired features have been implimented yet.

Features

Has the ability to get up to 8 product prices and calculates the amount of commission you will earn on each if you choose to affiliate the product.

This was my first attempt to utilize CSS design to it's fullest. The layout does not use tables.

Background

About a year and a half before creating ZuSHOP, I created a Perl script that parsed information from ClickBank. I stored the information in a MySQL database. I never really did much with it. I experimented with ad features much like Google Adsense (see the resulting Adbad.com) but results on my own pages didn't warrant going forward with it.

I decided to create this site to make a mini mall and affilate all the products and track information that would be helpful to me. In the end, I rewrote the parsing routines in PHP.

Description

This is a niche community site for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who use PDA's (Palm OS & Pocket PC). I mainly developed this site to have a central resource for downloads, links, and a forum. And, of course, to advertise Shiblon.com if I so desired.

This site was originally created with PHP Nuke, but I laterd changed it to CPG Nuke after have a few security issues with the former. I've yet to upgrade to the latest version of Dragonfly CMS due to various custom programming I've done with the modules.

This was my first attempt to create a ClickBank product. Linkcloak works much like TinyURL.com, but allows you to cloak links if desired and track hits. It was originally a pay for use service, but I decided I didn't want to spend any time supporting the service, so I made it free.

Atlanta Braves merchandise catalog. This is essentially on the Atlanta Braves merchandise one could find on Amazon put into a separate site.

Set up template system for StaggsGroup.com. StaggsGroup.com has many employees that can have their own domain name. In order to give employees some options to the look & feel of their personal site, I created this template system where they can change their template on the backend. I added 3 new templates for users to choos from. All sites have the same content except for some custom text and image on the contact screen.

After using Linkcloak for some time, I decided I wanted the same capablities on a number of different domains I owned. I wrote Super Affiliate Link Manager for this purpose.

This was also my first exposure to Smarty. I used it on this project mainly to see how it works and how well I liked it.

Feeling that others may want this same type of tool, I set it up to sell on ClickBank.

My high school alumni site - Union High School, Roosevelt, Utah.

Background

I credit this site with learning PHP, and ASP for that matter. An fellow alumni owned UnionHigh.org. Rather than trying to start a competative alumni site (It's a very small school anyway), I contacted him to see if I could help with it. It was on a Windows box and ASP was really the only thing available if I wanted to make the site dynamic. So I got a Webmonkey ASP crash course and created my first dynamic website. This was probably 2000 - 2001.

One day the site was just gone and the domain name registered to some other company. Then UnionHigh.com became available so I registered it and bought the cheapest hosting account I could find. The only thing available this time was PHP. So again, I took another Webmonkey crash course and reprogrammed the site in PHP. The original code can still be found on WXHS.com.

After doing other PHP work I decided to rewrite the whole thing. After about a year of the new system I decided wanted all the features that could be found in CPG-Nuke, so I wrote a custom alumni module and that is where it stands today.

I added a section in the admin tools allow an upload of a Microsoft Excel file with shipping information. The import adds tracking numbers to the database for customers to view and updates actual shipping costs. Also include customized error reporting and notes from which the company the product was shipped.

I was asked to create a simple website for a tanning salon. The client had already selected a template from Monster Templates. I took the photoshop file, changed a few elements, resliced it and made it an xhtml valid template which I broke into a php header & footer file for consistency.

Okay, my brother's wife's sister started this business. I was only her host, but her site was atrocious and created in Word, with a lot of Comic Sans text!

I offered to through it all into Frontpage and apply a common them to each page. The results turned out not bad, for a Frontpage site.

I then wrote a couple of simple forms to submit emails to her from the site.

My brother drew the logo and I colored it it photoshop - yes, I know of better ways to do this now. ;)

This was freelance work I won from GetAFrelancer.com. The owner wanted a Nuke style community site. I suggested Dragonfly. I installed some 3rd party modules (such as TotalCalendar) and wrote a custome modules for an RSS feed.

This was created after a number of requests from users of DVD Anthology who wanted to keep track of their music CDs as well. It hasn't become as popular as DVD Anthology. I suspect this is because 1) lack of promotion, and 2) CDs are not as popular as DVDs, nor is the need to track them.

Features

CD Anthology is more light-weight than DVD Anthology. There is less stored in the local database and more reliance on Amazon web services.

It was built on a phpBB database which allows for better integration and built in features associated with phpBB, such as login, private messages, etc.
